The RR300 is a low power turboshaft based on the architecture of the Allison 250 family of engines, but featuring new designed compressor and an engine monitoring system as standard. Design goals were: lower acquisition and operating costs; low-weigth, compact design; improved sfc; embedded engine monitoring system; and the ability to burn a wide variety of aviation fuels.

History (Geschichte)
After some studies, Rolls Royce struck an agreement with Robinson Helicopters in September 2005 concerning the development of a new engine for the proposed R66 five seater.
The new engine was announced at Heli-Expo on 2 March 2007. At that time, it had already accumulated some 150 hours on tests stands in Indianapolis. Also, two flightworthy engines had been delivered to Robinson. Certification was targeted for the fourth quarter of 2007 or in 2008.
At Heli Expo in March 2007 Rolls Royce also announced that it had signed Memoranda of Understanding with Schweizer, Enstrom and MD Helicopters to discuss future applications for the RR300.
A prototype RR300 was flying on a Robinson helicopter since mid-2007.
FAA certification for the RR300 was achieved in late December 2007.
On 12 March 2008, Rolls-Royce reported that a newly-commissioned small engine assembly line at the Rolls-Royce facility in Indianapolis, Indiana, had completed the assembly and test of its first production RR300 engine for installation in the new Robinson Helicopters R66. The delivery milestone "follows closely on the heels of receiving the Federal Aviation Administration Production Certification award", it was said. "Hundreds" were on order.
